الوزن الفعل The Patterns of verbs
This was put together by a student from information given by a teacher.
Arabic verbs have forms or patterns which change or add to the meaning of the original meaning. This is a text that gives the pattern of the first ten forms of the Arabic verbs. This is culled from a text that was given to me but I longer have a copy of; so this gives the understanding of the verb.
The verb is given with its past tense, present tense, gerund, active participle and passive participle or
فعل الماضى, المضارع , المصدر , اسم الفاعل , اسم المفعول
فَعَلَ, يَفعُلُ , فِعلٌ , فَاعِلٌ , مَفعُولٌ
Regular verbs describing actions, he did, she wrote etc
فَعَّلَ , يَفَعِّل , تَفعِيلٌ/تَفعِلَةٌ , مُفَعِّلٌ , مُفَعَّلٌ
Causative verbs (verbs that cause an action) describing actions. i.e. Caused someone to study, he caused someone to do. It does not need an object, it is transitive.
فَاعَلَ , يُفَاعِلُ , فِعَالٌ/مُفَاعَلَةٌ , مُفَاعِلٌ , مُفَاعَلٌ
Verbs describing actions done to someone but not returned , or continuity. He wrote but he did not write back, he watched someone but the other person didn't.
أَفعَلَ , يُفعِلُ , إِفعَالٌ , مُفعِلٌ , مُفعَلٌ
Verbs with concise meaning or making something possible. Meaning he expelled (or exiled) someone, or made someone present.
تَفَعَّلَ , يَتَفَعَّلُ , تَفَعُّلٌ , مُتَفَعِّلٌ , مُتَفَعَّلٌ
Verbs, where the subject of the verb and the action described by the verb implying, to distance oneself from something. This could mean a sense of distance from the verb for example "develop" could be or become developed, he avoided existing تخرّج , he distanced himself تَبَرَّأ , people gathered to
تجمّع الناس he gathered people.
تَفَاعَلَ , يَتَفَاعَلُ , تَفَاعُلٌ , مُتَفَاعِلٌ , مُتَفَاعَلٌ
Verbs where two subjects reciprocate in performing the same action (or feeling) described by a verb. Ie Helped one another, watched something, wrote to each other.
اِنفَعَلَ , يَنفَعِلُ , اِنفِعالٌ , مُنفَعِلٌ , ~
Verbs where the action described is perceived to have occurred on its own, something broke or a door closed on its own.
اِفتَعَلَ , يَفتَعِلُ , اِفتِعَالٌ , مُفتَعِلٌ , مُفتَعَلٌ
Verbs, that are in a sense reflexive. Describing an action done by oneself or by the subject to himself/itself. He moved himselfاِنتقل
, he realised
, he washed himself.
اِفعَلَّ , يَفعَلُّ , اِفعِلالٌ , مُفعَلٌّ , ~
Generally these verbs are describing an internal transformation, he turned red احمرّ , he became strong
اشتدَّ he became green.
اِستَفعَلَ , يُستُفعِلُ , اِستَفعَالٌ , مُستَفعِلٌ , مُستَفعَلٌ
These verbs are generally used to ask politely (or with humility) for something or someone to see the services of something, ask for forgiveness اِستغفر , he made used of something استمعل. Or it can be perceived as a request for something: i e مستشفاء hospital – seeking a cure.
